David Close, CloseSculpture.com
David Close captures images of people who have been shaped by the test of time. Each of his realistic, figurative, bronze sculptures tells a portion of the story we all share. Close says, “I feel that the glory of my subjects speaks through their survival and needs no additional adornment.”
Close, a graduate of Western State College in Colorado holds a degree in Psychology. His education, combined with his interest in sports and the outdoors, was what first brought him to Hawaii to teach outdoor education and run a summer-camp program on Oahu’s North Shore. It was here that he learned about the Hawaiian culture from many different perspectives, and that one of the common themes of people living in harmony with nature, whether Native American or Hawaiian, is their respect of the land; and their understanding that they are part of the land.
Always searching for an outlet of artistic expression, David Close began sculpting when a friend accidentally left some sculpting supplies behind. A natural talent, he is inspired by native cultures and their harmony with the earth. It is his passion to perpetuate the images of these people.
David grew up in the Rocky Mountains where he enjoyed camping, skiing, hiking, whitewater rafting, kayaking, rock climbing, fishing, hunting and photography. Here in Hawaii, he enjoys the ocean and water sports including surfing, free-diving, and snorkeling. A carpenter – yes, David Close works his magic with wood too – he lives in Kailua where he spends his spare time at the beach and parks with his dog, Moku.
